As soon as you enter our home, Thrybergh Park, you will know you have arrived at a special place. Rolling fairways, edged by mature trees, fill the vista on both sides of the long driveway which meanders through the course to the club house. Our greenkeepers pride themselves on presenting a course we too are proud of. It is varied, not too long, yet full of surprises to satisfy the most discerning of golfers.
Not many clubs can boast a neo-Gothic clubhouse steeped in history that was the ancestral home of one of South Yorkshire’s most illustrious families.
The current house dates from 1811, when Napoleon ruled France and Britain was fighting wars on four fronts, Incidentally it was also the year of the first recorded Ladies’ Golf Tournament, staged at Mussleburgh.
Today the clubhouse is a hive of activity, with its bars and celebrated catering. In the 19th Bar members can be found talking through every shot they played, or watching sport in the Danny Willett lounge on Sky TV.
It is also home to numerous social events enjoyed by members throughout the year. These include relaxed barbecues, family fun days, curry and chilli nights, gourmet meals as well formal black tie events such as the Captain’s Dinner and our New Year’s Eve Gala Dinner.
Members at Rotherham enjoy a full programme of golfing events throughout the year, both playing against each other and at home and away against other clubs.
There are a host of competitions to be played for including the scratch medal, a 36-hole strokeplay event, the Captain’s Prize, a knockout matchplay tournament played throughout the season culminating in a 36-hole final, and the Fullerton Cup.
A Winter Order of Merit keeps the interest going throughout the colder months – with various weekend competitions being enjoyed.
The club has a strong men’s section and enters scratch teams into leagues and knockout competitions run by the Sheffield Union and Yorkshire Union. We have regularly produced county players and our best known home grown is professional tour star, Danny Willett.
No matter what your age or ability, you will find something at Rotherham Golf Club for you. Senior male golfers compete in the Spondon Trophy – a seven-a-side team event featuring clubs across several counties – our senior members are regulars in the many “fiddle” gatherings and groups of members take to the course daily.
The Ladies also enjoy a full season of competition. In addition to their own programme of monthly competitions, they enjoy a full programme of competitive and social golf.
Juniors and beginners can take advantage of lessons from the pro shop and are helped to develop the technical skills and the etiquette required to make the game of golf so enjoyable. Many of our juniors go on to represent the club, county and country.
The Ladies and Gentlemen’s sections are fully integrated, with all members treated equally in all respects and we have a longstanding tradition of Mixed Competitions.
